The breast reduction surgery is to reduce the size of breasts as per one’s individual likes. The reduction of the size of breasts does not have any good or bad effect on one’s body except to make it appear proper according to the body size. Breasts always need not be of any particular size as per the size of the body, and it can sometimes grow out of proportion, which a woman likes to have it their own way as they want.
Even though there are Breast reduction and breast enlargement surgeries, here we are going to talk about Breast reduction Surgery. Since it is major surgery, the Surgeon will have to ascertain that the person has to be in proper mental and physical health, which is very important while undergoing surgery and for speedy recovery post-surgery.
Can it be performed on males?
The breast reduction surgery is sometimes done on men too, which is called ‘Gynecomastia.’ This cosmetic surgery removes excess fat and tissues to restore it to flatter and tighter that fits and looks proper to a man. But mostly, breast reduction surgeries are done on women who feel that their breasts are not according to their body shapes.
The important thing to note here is that breast reduction surgery is cosmetic in nature rather than medically needed, which is performed on female models, film actresses and public figures who are aware of their appearances.
How is this surgery performed?
The Surgeon and the person on whom the surgery is to be performed discuss everything in detail as to whether any medical issues or other complications are already there or not. Detailed physical and medical examinations are made before performing the surgery. Also, how much reduction is required is decided and recorded. The doctor also decides how much tissues are required to be removed from each breast.
The breast reduction surgery may take about 2-3 hours or up to 5-6 hours or sometimes even longer. The Surgeon will make cuts around the nipple in the area called ‘Areola’ and deep down inside on the breast in the form of a keyhole. Then extra skin, tissue, and fat from the breasts are carefully removed and reposition the nipple. The Surgeon may use drainage tubes and then stitch up the breasts and wrap them in a special gauze. Special cupped bras will be provided.
Recovery From Breast Reduction Surgery
The operated person will need to take a few days off from regular routines after breast reduction surgery. Some people may need up to two weeks for recovery, but each situation varies. The Surgeon will instruct on follow-up appointments for removing bandages and stitches.
After breast reduction surgery, one should expect to feel tired and to have breast pain. This is normal. The Surgeon will give oral painkillers or anti-inflammatory drugs to ease through the first few days after surgery. The person should also avoid heavy lifting and should take care to see that the breast is not affected in any way.
Some people may experience an emotional reaction, such as feeling depressed after the surgery. That can be normal, but one should make sure that the difficulty experienced either physically or psychologically is properly conveyed.
