Somethings Every Makeup Artist Wishes Everyone Knew about that

Makeup artistry is just similar to any other art-based career and every makeup artist is different. But have you ever wondered what your makeup artist thinks while working mere inches from your face? Here are some things and secrets that makeup artists wish they could tell you to your face.

Bring a Real Makeup Inspiration

When looking for makeup inspiration, make sure that you find someone with the same skin tone as yours. If you show up with a photo of Halle Berry, but you have fair skin, this can be problematic if you’re wanting to look like her when your makeup is finished. Look for someone that’s really close to your skin tone and a look that you think will visually transform your features.

Choose Just One Favourite Feature

Sometimes you show them a celebrity photo and would really love to have the same look but there are times that you can’t have them all, so just pick the one feature from the look that speaks to you the most. You can pick the eyes, cheeks, or lips and your makeup artist can use that to influence the entire look of your makeup.

Promote Self-Confidence

Their job is to be a natural makeup junkie and advocate of helping their clients to have better self-esteem for them to look and feel their best. They don’t sell the idea of being fake or concealing your authentic self. Their job is to enhance natural beauty and make you look fabulous for your photos.

Check Your Manners

The makeup industry is small if you are looking at the consensus from makeup artists. And as the word travels quick, try to be nice to your makeup artist. If you are always or have been rude to one of them, chances are everyone in the industry locally will know about your behaviour too. Sometimes, makeup artists would say that they’re booked when they’re really not just to avoid doing your makeup.

Show Up With Bare Face

This is one of the common mistakes that clients always do. Some show up to their session with dry, dirty skin. Avoid putting makeup when you show up if you want to get the biggest makeup bang for your buck. Just wash and clean your face well before your appointment.

Your makeup relies better on a freshly cleansed and moisturized face which means taking off any makeup residue! You will get the most of your money by taking care of your skin every day.

Never Insult Their Talent

Makeup artists are tired of customers who sit in their chair and say, ‘I don’t want to look like a clown’ because this can be pretty insulting to their profession. Look at their portfolio before you hire them. If you like it, then you can guarantee that they will perform a great job on you as they have on their clients.

Don’t Feel Sorry

Never apologize for what you see as imperfections when you are just perfect just the way you are. Makeup artists see all kinds of beauty and there is no judgment. It’s okay for you to be who you are since they’re not focusing on your flaws. So be kind to yourself and stop saying sorry.

Heavy Contour May Not Suit You

Whether it’s light or heavy, contouring is not for everyone. Especially heavy, contoured makeup since it requires constant touchup. An average person who wears heavy contour can be really high maintenance and impractical. Majority of people who do this are your favourite celebrities who travel around with a full glam squad to keep their skin powdered and blended behind the scenes. Just be aware that this kind of makeup is often better left for the stage.

Be Patient to Wait For Your Turn

Great makeup artists know that cleanliness is their number one priority. So be patient if they take 10 minutes extra to clean their brushes between clients when working at a bridal party, that it is for your benefit and theirs. Usually, they have factored it already at that time when they booked in your party.

Makeup Artists Are Not Doctors

Clients must be aware that your makeup artist can’t diagnose any skin condition, nor your pimples are not their concern or any type of skin irritation. Although they can offer a few advice, remember that you should get that checked out by a professional.

Be Blunty Honest and a Perfectionist

Your makeup artists wouldn’t mind if you’re in their chair for 3 hours (as long as it’s okay with you), they will fix, redo, remove, whatever they can to achieve the look the way you want it to be. They want you to be honest as possible so you can love your look and in return, your makeup artist will love your look too.

Give them directions and be specific with what you like. The more that they know what you want, the easier it is to achieve the goal.
